How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

We contour, paint, and highlight our faces with makeup brushes almost every day, but can we really say the same thing about how frequently we are cleaning our brushes? A clean every month or so is just not enough and makeup artists and dermatologists suggest we should be cleaning up our tools far more often to prevent bacteria build up. More bacteria means more breakouts, which is something we want to avoid!

We should be cleaning our makeup brushes weekly, but even if you clean your makeup brushes more regularly, can you be sure you're cleaning them well? Lots of people just give their makeup brush tools a quick rinse underwater, but this is not enough to clear bacteria.

Below we take you through the steps needed to ensure your makeup brushes are in tip-top condition!

1. Use lukewarm water to wet the bristles of your makeup brushes

2. Pour a small amount of your cleanser of choice into the palm of your clean hand

3. Next, massage the tips of the bristles in your palm (do this gently so you don't break the bristles)

4. Rinse the bristles thoroughly under lukewarm water

5. Using a clean towel, squeeze out any extra water

6. Re-form the brush head of your brushes back into the original shape

7. Lastly, allow your makeup brushes to dry. This is best done by placing your makeup brushes on the edge of a table or countertop with the bristles hanging off the edge. This will allow your brush to dry into the correct shape for use again.

Remember, don't let your makeup brushes dry on a towel as this could cause the bristles to grow mildew.

All it takes is seven simple steps to clean your makeup brushes and ensure they're safe to use on your face.
