Tips for Avoiding and Removing Mould During Winter
Winter doesn’t seem like the time of year for mould to thrive in the home. But, as we close our doors and windows, soak up the mist of a hot shower and turn on the heaters or light the fires – you can see how easily it becomes a mould and mildew haven. Thriving on heat and moisture, the warmer you are, the happier the spores will be.
Thankfully, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep mould and mildew at bay. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to get a head start on preparing your home for the hot summer months.
1. Increase Air Circulation
One of the easiest ways to prevent mould growth is to increase air circulation, which can help reduce humidity levels. Open windows and use fans to keep the air moving, especially in areas prone to moisture buildup. If the cold weather makes opening windows less appealing, consider investing in a dehumidifier. Keeping indoor humidity levels below 40% can significantly reduce the chances of mould forming.
2. Look For and Repair Leaks
Leaks are a common cause of excess moisture. Regularly inspect common areas such as windows, doorways, and skylights for any signs of leaks. Don’t forget to check your indoor plumbing, too. And if you do find something, make sure you address these as soon as possible. Mould and mildew grow quickly – ignoring the leak can lead to bigger problems (and more money) in the long run.
3. Wash Mats and Shower Curtains Regularly
Bathroom mats and shower curtains are hotspots for mould due to their frequent exposure to moisture. To keep things fresh, make sure to wash them regularly. Also, it's a good idea to go for machine-washable mats and swap out shower curtains if you spot any mould.
4. Use Exhaust Fans
Cooking and taking hot showers add significant moisture to your home’s environment. Always use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom to help reduce condensation. Leave the fans on for 20-30 minutes after cooking or showering to ensure all the moisture is vented out. Wipe down any visible moisture on walls and surfaces with a dry rag.
5. Control Indoor Plants
While indoor plants can improve air quality and add to your home's aesthetic, they also add to the humidity levels. Make sure you don’t overwater your plants and try to place them in well-ventilated areas. You might also consider using moisture-absorbing plant soil to reduce the risk of mould growth around your greenery.
