There’s nothing quite like the smell of a clean bathroom, but unfortunately, it’s often quite a chemical-based odour as well. It’s time to deal with those nasty bathroom stinks.

The Hot Cycle

Your towels and bathmats often carry a slight mildew smell, which you can eradicate by washing regularly on the hottest cycle. You should be washing your bathmat at least once a week, but ideally, every three days or so. Towels should be washed after three uses. And your hand towels should be replaced every two days or so. Essential Oils

Essential oils are a cheap and effective way to eliminate bathroom odours. This suggestion is two-fold. The first part is dabbing your essential oil of choice inside the toilet roll so that it releases a scent every time someone uses the toilet roll. The second part is using essential oil to create your own poo-potpourri. You will need a small spray bottle, half a cup of water, 40 drops of your chosen essential oil, two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol, and three tablespoons of vegetable glycerine. You may also want to add a food colouring of your choice, whether you prefer pink, blue or green. Use a funnel to add the ingredients to the bottle, place the lid on, and give it a good shake before you spray. And before you use the toilet, spray inside the toilet liberally. Odours-away!

Cleaning the Toilet

This is another two-fold point. First things first, you need to thoroughly clean the toilet – start by removing the toilet lid. Most toilet lids and seats unclip easily so check yours to make sure it does before you try. Spray the entire surface, including the cistern, base and around the floor. You would be surprised how far urine travels (in fact, you can use a black light to find out just how far). Let your cleaner sit for a few minutes before you scrub it down. It's important to clean the toilet properly, but you have to consider the toilet brush holder as well. So, once the clean is done, use the toilet seat as a wedge for the toilet brush so it has time to dry before you place it in the brush holder. It may be worth your while to spritz some of your essential oil mixture into the holder as well.
